A Visit to the County Fair

Last week I mentioned that I won some ribbons at the Howard County Fair. The day I learned that news was the first day in years I had visited a county fair.  A few years ago, I was given free tickets to the Maryland State Fair so I went with a friend. Other than that it had been years since I had been to any kind of fair.

When I was a young adult, I lived in the Bay Area. I went to county fairs and state fairs every year. They were literally every summer weekend, and doing anything in the summer in California is fun. When I moved back to Minnesota( my first time there was as a college and grad school student), I visited the State Fair almost every year. That was the “in” thing” to do. If you did not boast about your day at the Fair or rather days at the Fair, you were not really a true Minnesotan, and you could pack your bags right then and take the next train out of town.

While Maryland is a strong agriculture state, the presence of the fairs are not played up by the locals. I visited this year twice( once with Kim) because I had entered my photos in the photography contest. But you know what!  I had a blast both days. The first day I was by myself.  I took photos for 3 hours( click on the” Recent Photos” tab above to see a few). On the second day with Kim, my very patient wife,  I participated more in the activities. We pet the animals, talked with politicians, rocked out with the Rock and Roll Relics and ate lots of fair food. I even won her a Winnie the Pooh. It cost me only $15 to win the $2 bear! No rides though. Kim emphatically told me  that she gets sick on all rides-Ferris Wheel and Carousel included. I did not want to spoil our time there.

We plan to go to the Maryland State Fair this year  because I am entering some photos in the competition there. I expect to have as much fun there as I did last week. Who knows. Maybe this will be an annual affair for us.

Check out my photos below of the Fair. Let me know what you think. Also tell me about your own fair experiences.

T and Dawn won the weekly contest this week! Congrats to them on getting a free photo. You can leave a comment on any page on this site and be entered into the drawing to win the photos on the “home” page. Click on “Home” tab above to see the photos.

I love the black and white At the Fair. It reminds me of the local county fair, packed with people, rides and all sorts of food that was never eaten any other time of the year.

    • Thanks, Beth, for viewing. I know what you mean about the food. I ate funnel cake and a corn dog. Paid $5 for a lemonade. Never would any place else. Loved the corn breading but try not to think about the dog part!

I entered and attended County fairs for years as a child and young woman. The County had purchased land in my small town to hold the annual fair, so I never missed it. What beautiful memories your photos bring back! Thanks for the chance to win one!

Hi Kathi, Been really view these pictures. I’m finding it hard to choose just one. Each time I look at them I notice something new. I like what Beth said about the Fair food, most of the people are young and it has a Farris Wheel. Long Lines of folks waiting for food..No doubt about it, you are at a Fair grounds. I would say the focus is on the people.

Then there is the Infared and it clearly at a fair grounds showing a perfect view of the tea pot and teacups with the children having fun. I like the clouds. In Memphis,TN it always rained during the Fair. The picture has a central focus of the tea party. I think I prefer this one for first and the B& W for second.

A fun hobby. Thanks. Oh Remember the roasted turkey legs. My mouth is watering.

    Good Luck.
