Orchids and Lilies

I am fortunate that Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia have lots of gardens, history houses with gardens and state and federal parks to explore. This makes photographing the outdoor beauty much easier and less expensive.

I often visit the same places every year, but strive to create new scenes using my imagination.

Sometimes I discover new places; “hidden gems”, that I learn about from a newspaper article, a casual mention or pouring over the internet to find places for out of town guests to go.

The photos in this blog were taken at Brookside Garden and Hillwood Mansion.

I shared Brookside with KI . She had never been there. It is a county garden and is free. The autumn there is spectacular, but you can’t go wrong at any time of year.

Hillwood Mansion was a second trip for me. I first visited this place last August with my 85 year old mom and now deceased step father. It was the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the Post cereal heiress.

It took me 10 years to find this place which I found was not unusual. Many Washingtonians have never even heard of this wonderful historic site.

Next week I will feature more photos from these two mid-Atlantic gems. For now, enjoy these photos and hope you can visit both these places when you come my way!

Beautiful photos Kathi, I particularly like sun glow best. Thanks for sharing your art. We too find it hard to find new places to capture, we don’t have anywhere near as much variety as you seem to have but I will be on the lookout for articles in the paper. We generally don’t get the paper but I may need to start buying the weekend papers to get inspiration and ideas.
