Birds, Birds and More Birds

If you have followed my blog since the beginning or for at least the past 18 months, you know I love photographing birds. Common wisdom has it that birds shot close up or in flight are the most photogenic. I don’t necessarily disagree, but I do believe setting is also important.

The following flamingos and pelican were taken at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, and the seagulls were taken in Virginia on the Potomac River. I find each shot compelling for different reasons.

I love the close up nature of “Treasure Hunt”, focusing on the bill. The distance shot of the flamingoes show action in a greater setting, cast in a beautiful light. The lighting as well as the action are striking to me.

The gulls are made more beautiful by the soft background and colors behind them, making their white feathers stand out and giving them a more regal pose, almost as if they stood for their portrait.

Another lovely series, Kathi! I haven’t thought so much about the context in bird photography, but I can see how it produces a whole different atmosphere compared with close-ups and flight captures. The flamingo images are gorgeous – amazing in Winner Takes All how the two in the foreground form a heart shape with their beaks and necks. And the lighting on the one behind them is striking! Also, very cool in Treasure Hunt how the line between the upper and lower beaks forms a leading line into the image!

it was one of the first days shooting with my new full frame camera-Nikon D750. I pushed the lens on the flamingoes, but it turned out well. And the lighting was beautiful.
I also noticed the heart shape when viewing afterwards. Thank you again for the thoughtful comments.

    Hey Kathy,
I really like the sunlight in the winner takes all shot! and the moodiness of punched one. You should be proud of the shots you are getting with the new camera. They look great!
